The National Broadband Network (NBN)
The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an Australian Government initiative, which will deliver much faster broadband to all Australians. It is the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the Australian Government – an investment up to $43 billion over eight years. The eight year construction of the NBN will support an average of 25,000 jobs a year, peaking at 37,000 at the height of activity. Many of these employees will be eligible to join the ETU.
The ETU/CEPU understands the importance of this development and has a National Broadband Network project steering committee. Representatives from each state branch make up this committee.
Allen Hicks, the ETU Queensland Assistant State Secretary, has been seconded to National Office as the National Project Co-ordinator.
The first priority for the NBN roll out is to have people with the correct skill set doing the work and being remunerated appropriately.
This is highly skilled work and needs to be completed safely and accurately the first time. There should also be a “legacy benefit” from the roll out for regional communities, which includes a decent apprentice ratio and, where possible, training and jobs for young people, particularly in areas of high unemployment.
Allen can be contacted at allenhicks@nat.cepu.asn.au
